The Expanding School Environment: A Response by the Independent School Commentary Panel to Recent Studies of Secondary Education.

Balance academic and maturational needs of students and maintain both academic standards and the quality of an expanding school environment are the recommendations of six independent school heads. Their responses in this book of essays are to critics of secondary education who propose (1) that more education should take place outside the school in internships and work experiences; (2) that youth should study with learners of all ages in "intergenerational" learning environments; (3) that youth should be granted more responsibility and independence by their schools; (4) that school should concentrate on preparing students for a gradual transition to adulthood by being as concerned with social maturation as they now are with academic development. These proposals come from numerous national reports published since 1972. While generally supporting the proposals of the reformers, the school heads--all practicing school principals--have written essays on issues seen by the panel as receiving inadequate attention in the reports. Topics include the environment of the school in the late 70s, the curriculum, the measurement and evaluation of learning given the introduction of off-campus learning into the school program, the tasks of adolescence, and the changing role of the school head.
