Good information is essential to making intelligent policy decisions. The availability of information about education in Manitoba is hampered both by the questionable validity of much of the data and by the lack of centralized sources. Without attempting to be exhaustive, this booklet briefly analyzes the types of information available on resources (students, teachers, facilities, money, support services, and materials), processes (curriculum, school-community interaction, authority and decision-making, research, and classroom practices), and results (achievement, economic results, and social results). Areas where relevant information remains unavailable are noted. While the information presented is meant to be illustrative of types of data, a general picture of education in Manitoba emerges. The report concludes that improvements in data collection should be made with an eye toward the immediate usefulness of data in terms of the amount of information to be collected, its availability, and the frequency of its collection.
