Changing Role of the Principal. ACSA Special Report Vol. 7, No. 7.
Association of California School Administrators.
A number of forces are changing the role of the school site administrator. Federal, state, and local requirements, including categorical programs such as those for educationally disadvantaged children, place added administrative burdens on the principal. Increased paperwork, meetings, problems to be solved, and demands to be met from ever-growing numbers of ever more militant interest groups (both legislatively created and unofficial), leave principals feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and undersupported. This brief document previews a longer report currently being prepared for release by the Association of California School Administrators. Tables illustrate the increase in categorical aid programs, the interrelated requirements of twelve major legislative programs, and the complex range of a modern principal's responsibilities, which involve interaction with eighteen separate groups.
