This report is part of a continuing series providing information on the status and progress of studies dealing with the nature of speech, instrumentation for its investigation, and practical applications of research. The report covers the period from 1 January 1978 through 31 March 1978, and includes extended reports on the following topics: articulatory synthesis as a tool for the perceptual evaluation of articulatory gestures; the relation between processing the Roman and Cyrillic alphabets analyzed with bi-alphabetical readers; lexical decision for inflected nouns; phonetic plausibility of the segmentation of tones in Thai phonology; closure hiatus as a cue to voicing, manner, and place of consonant occlusion; metaphoric comprehension studies in reminding and resembling; skill acquisition studies in an event approach with special reference to searching for the optimum of a function of several variables; detection errors on "the" and "and"; perception of (s)+stop clusters; perceptual integration of cues for stop, fricative, and affricate manner; diachronic tone splits and voicing shifts in Thai; a range effect in the perception of voicing; perceptuomotor adaptation of speech; and interdependence of voicing and place decisions for stop consonants in initial position.
