Papers which were presented at the Armidale Conference at the University of New England in Australia constitute the body of this book. An introduction to the book is followed by the opening address of the conference. Section one contains the conference's working papers and individual statements from some of the conference participants. The statements are grouped to follow the working paper to which their thinking has the most relevance. The paper topics include: (1) language and learning in teacher education, (2) language and literature, (3) models for collaboration, and (4) power and politics in education. Section two contains the speakers' position papers which cover such topics as classroom communication in teacher education; teaching reading and writing; language, literature, and drama in teacher education; teaching interpersonal communication skills; trends in teacher education in Australia; requirements for preservice education, and the needs of the employer. Section three includes the impressions of the conference by three conference participants. Resolutions are given at the end of the book, followed by appendixes containing two speeches. (JF)
