Project on External Degree Models in Gerontology.
This project explores a number of external degree models that could be offered to non-credentialed persons who are providing (or who want to provide) human services to older persons in New York State. Although the project was carried out in New York, the models could be applied in other settings as well. The initial motivation for the project had two elements: first, that these non-credentialed service workers could improve their present and future job status by acquiring an academic credential; and second, that the knowledge acquired through the credentialling process would improve the quality of services to older persons. Essentially, there are three different models of external degree achievement that can be adapted with emphasis on gerontology: the instructional model, the contractual model and the testing model. A variety of educational institutions in New York State have had extensive experience with delivering each of the three models. In addition, educational resources are available throughout the state to provide instruction in many aspects of gerontology. Detailed descriptions of the models, the other educational resources available, and the assessed need for such programs are provided. (Author)
