Counseling Alcoholic Clients: Basic Communication Skills. Participant Handbook.
National Center for Alcohol Education, Arlington, VA.
This training program handbook focuses on the presentation and practice of eight basic communication skills: attending, paraphrasing, reflection of feeling, summarizing, probing, counselor self-disclosure, interpreting, and confrontation. The skills are presented in 10 sessions, one for each of the eight skills and two integrating sessions. The eight skill building sessions follow the same basic pattern: (1) an exercise illustrating one or more aspects of the skill; (2) a description of the skill as it is used in training; (3) a demonstration of each skill poorly and competently applied; (4) skill practice in small groups; and (5) a discussion of this skill in counseling clients with alcohol-related problems.
