The institutional structure of higher education in Taiwan today is outlined and an up-to-date picture of the status of higher educational institutions on the island is presented. As of 1964-65, Taiwan had 55 recognized institutions of higher education comprised of 42 civilian colleges and 13 additional institutions operating under the auspices of military and police authorities. These institutions of higher education are classified by type and control. This is followed by a discussion of the major academic subdivisions, programs of study, and degrees offered. A comprehensive list of degree-granting institutions of higher education in Taiwan, containing information on their major academic subdivisions, the length of the various courses they offer, the degrees they confer, and other descriptive data is presented in the appendix.
