You've Come a Long Way Baby! Where Tomorrow?
Chavious, Dolores; Mordoh, Rose Lee
In this instructional manual for secondary school students, contemporary concerns of women are addressed. Suggested lesson plans and activities are presented under five headings. In "The Way It Is, The Way It Was," changes in women's images in the media in the U.S. and women's roles in other countries are among the topics for discussion. In a section entitled "Women and Words," the phenomenon of gender in some foreign languages and the gender attributes of certain English words are examined. Information on changing female employment patterns is presented in "Women and Jobs." In "Women and Men," women's roles as wives and mothers, women's financial power, the links between social inequality and hostility between the sexes, and some of the facts surrounding the Equal Rights Amendment are discussed. The theme "Women and Crime" is also briefly addressed. Organizations and other resources dealing with women's rights are listed. Also included is a guide for teachers, specifying objectives, ideas, concepts, and information useful for presenting the unit; suggesting subject and course areas where the materials may be used; outlining what students can be expected to accomplish through this course; and listing sample activities.
