Annual Evaluation Report, Title I, ESEA, Fiscal Year 1975.
Massachusetts State Dept. of Education, Boston. Bureau of Curriculum Services.
Of the 345 Title I projects in operation in Massachusetts during 1975 58% were conducted during the school year, and 42% were conducted during the summer term. During this year, 77,706 children attending both public and nonpublic schools participated in Title I programs. Of the 319 projects responding, 98% indicated that they had an active Title I Parent Advisory Council. Reading was the major activity area. Mathematics was the second most frequent activity. Other major activity areas in which over 20,000 children were involved included physical education and recreation, social and emotional development, and cultural enrichment. The achievement data reported by the projects impose several limitations on conclusions drawn about the educational achievement of program participants. Since no uniform statewide testing program exists, scores reported vary in number and in kind. The achievement data used in this report were derived from projects that included reading and arithmetic as a major activity. In grades 1 through 8, except grade 4 there were reading gains. There were large gains in arithmetic in grades 1 through 6. (Author/AM)
