This survey of Puerto Ricans living on the Lower East Side of New York City covers: (1) family and household composition, (2) family mobility and economic level, (3) use of public and private agencies in Puerto Rico, (4) factors influencing migration, (5) use of public and private agencies in New York City, (6) parental absence, (7) use of foster care services, (8) use of day care services, (9) knowledge of community facilities, and (10) language. The profile of Puerto Rican families that emerges from the survey is both brighter and bleaker than had been expected. A rate of 92% employed men in sampled families was higher than anticipated by overall poverty area unemployment figures. Also the rate of school attendance and the fact that 75% of the children over the age of 19 had completed the ninth grade or above is encouraging. However, it was also found that half the households have only one parent and live in poor housing. Parents are victims of too little education and no job experience for the women and little training for the men. They also show a lack of familiarity either with the English language or community resources. (Author/AM)
