Instructional Strategy Gap: The Competency-Based Teacher Education (CBTE)- Humanistic Education Dichotomy.
Vittetoe, Marie; Hooker, Ellen
Principles of performance based teacher education and humanistic education are surveyed, and both sets are found applicable and necessary for the preparation of health occupations teachers. The Health Occupations Teacher Education Program (HOTEP) of the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign is presented as an example of a program blending the two instructional approaches. Instructional problems basic to each of the theories are examined, and it is observed that reliance upon a narrow or single-minded philosophy of education will inevitably cause problems in developing fully competent educators.
