Track and Field: An Administrative Approach to the Science of Coaching.
Steben, Ralph E.; Bell, Sam
This textbook on track and field organization and administration is directed toward the college physical education student and the track coach interested in technical, in-depth material. Each event is discussed under appropriate areas of physical categorization, with analysis of basic, biomechanical aspects of the activity. Line drawings and sequence photographs supplement the text, which emphasizes critical, mechanical coaching factors. The material is divided into five sections: (1) prerequisites for coaching (philosophy, cross country/track and field organization and administration, conditioning, and training); (2) coaching the field events--jumps (high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault); (3) coaching the field events--throws (shot put, discus, javelin, hammer); (4) coaching the running events (basic techniques, sprints and relays, middle distance, distance, hurdles); and (5) caring for the athlete (injuries and special needs of female athletes).
