The Effective Teacher of Reading, Revisited.

In reevaluating issues involving the effective teaching of reading, this paper considers formal versus informal education, the pace of instruction, the difficulty of reading materials and the criteria that are used to match the text to the student, attention span and its relation to academic achievement, the effectiveness of instructional grouping versus individualization, motivation and management, instructional emphasis, and "academic engaged time" (the amount of time a student is actively involved in formal instruction). After recent research in each of these areas of concern is reviewed, research implications for teacher education (including competency-based teacher education) are considered. (RL)
