The Utilization of the Oregon Department of Education Materials by Vocational Teachers in Linn, Benton and Lincoln Counties. Final Report.
Lofts, Ada
Secondary vocational instructors, community college instructors, and career directors in three Oregon counties were interviewed to assess usage of occupational cluster guides, individualized instruction packages, and other curriculum materials developed by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE). Focus was on level and depth of usage, deterrents to full utilization of ODE materials, and the types of materials that should be developed in the future. The conclusions include the following: (1) most instructors utilize ODE materials for more than one purpose; (2) the use of materials varies between teachers of the various occupational clusters; (3) most instructors utilize materials in developing curriculum, supplementing instruction, and planning their program; (4) most instructors have ODE materials located in their offices or classrooms; (5) there has not been an organized approach for getting new materials into the field; (6) preservice and post-graduate training should be more intensive in how to use the cluster guides in curriculum development and the adaptation of individualized learning materials; (7) the primary deterrents to the use of ODE materials are the limited range of usage for some materials, lack of training in the proper use of materials, and lack of knowledge of existence of materials; and (8) future publications should contain more specifics that are helpful to the classroom teacher.
