Application Based Teacher Education: A K-12 Core Methods Proposal.

This document presents a model of a K-12, preservice teacher education core methods course. The model, developed for the College of Education, Cleveland State University, is designed to meet methods needs of all junior-level preservice students, regardless of certification area, who have completed earlier experiences in social and psychological foundations with related field experiences. Presented in the document are: (l) historical development of the K-12 methods core model; (2) underlying assumptions of the model; (3) overview of the program; (4) descriptions of program components; (5) pattern of core and other teacher preparation components; (6) principles relating to instructional design of the program; (7) specific objectives activities, and application exercises in the areas of creating positive learning environments, planning and implementing instruction, reading instruction, and media equipment use. Basic principles assuring articulation among program elements (both core and non-core) are discussed. Appendices present measurement instruments for teaching evaluation in core and special academic areas, and sources of activities for improving interpersonal relations and communication skills. (MJB)
