The purpose of this paper is to explore the topic of risk recreation and its implications for the professional recreation director. The question is raised, "Is there a reasonable rationale and justification to warrant public sponsorship of risk recreation programs?" High risk activities are identified, and their relative dangers are examined. The personal psychological and social reasons people engage in high risk sports are analyzed, and the trend toward more participation in this type of activity is explained. The legal implications associated with risk recreation programs are explored with recommendations for precautionary steps to avoid litigation in case of accidents. The author concludes that with responsible leadership, high adventure and risk recreation can play an important role in satisfying the needs of people who enjoy such activities. (JD)
