In order to determine views held by and toward out of school rural youth in terms of educational and occupational aspirations, alternatives to rice farming, migration propensity, and community participation, a survey was conducted during July, 1977, in Sir-bua, a rice-farming village in northeast Thailand. Utilizing an interview guide and an administered questionnaire, 15-24 year-old out of school youth (90), their parents (104), village development committee members (12), and community development workers (14) were surveyed. Among the relationships found to be significant were: the higher the exposure to the outside world, non-formal training, or migration potentials, the higher the educational aspiration; the greater the experience in non-formal training, the higher the degree of community participation; and the higher the "spiritual health" idealism, the higher the degree of community participation. An over-arching consideration was that those who would work with Thai out of school rural youth must understand the Buddhist view of the interrelatedness of work and play.
