The Frequency of Creativity Components on Two Children's Television Programs, and Studies of the Ability of Seventeen Three-Year-Olds to Exhibit These Same Creativity Components.
Dillon, Mae
This paper reviews research on creativity, children's television-viewing habits, and television's effects on children; rates two children's programs for creativity content; and describes the results of creativity tasks presented to 3-year-olds. In Section I, various definitions of creativity (as related to person, process, product and environment) are discussed. Seven possible components of creativity considered important by Torrance and Guilford are listed. Section II reviews research on the effects of television (positive and negative) on children. Section III reports the ratings of 10 one-hour Sesame Street and 10 half-hour Mister Rodger's Neighborhood programs for frequency of the seven creativity components. Section IV reports the results of a study in which 17 3-year-olds were presented with four creativity tasks shown on Sesame Street. Preschool teachers' independent ratings of children's flexibility were compared with task scores as were maternal estimates of how often their children viewed Sesame Street and Mister Rodger's Neighborhood each week. Implications for education are discussed. Appendices contain program creativity data and data from the study. (SB)
