Procedures and policies by which a new course is introduced into the Oakton Community College curriculum were analyzed in order to discover appropriate procedures for attaining course approval from the internal college governance structure, to implement those procedures in obtaining final approval, and to make recommendations for improvement of the policies and procedures by which various necessary approvals are received or denied. The investigation followed a proposed new course in Medical Ethics from initiation through final approval at the Illinois Community College Board level, exploring discipline faculty approval, Faculty Curriculum Committee disapproval and return to faculty committee, and approval at the college administrative level. Although course approval procedure was clear at the state level, internal faculty governance had no written policy for approval or disapproval. The role of the Curriculum and Instruction Vice President in course proposals, and the procedures outlined in the college policy and procedures manual regarding the Curriculum Committee's role in course approval and proposal were unclear.
