Task Force on American National Standards Committee Z39: Activities and Future Directions.
American National Standards Inst., Inc., New York, NY.
The Z39 Committee develops voluntary consensus standards in library work, documentation, and related publishing practices. This report discusses its history, financing, activities, administration, and recommendations on future courses of action. The Task Force recommends that (1) the committee name be changed and the scope of interest restated; (2) a more planned approach to standards development be adopted; (3) the Council of National Library Associations continue to serve as secretariat with some reorganization of current procedures; (4) Z39 should remain a single committee, but with officers elected by the representatives of the member organization; (5) this report be widely distributed; and (6) funding proposals to the National Science Foundation be initiated.
