Presented is the report of a workshop to review the state-of-the-art and government plans for research, development, and deployment of personal systems for independent travel by the physically handicapped. Section I includes papers on the interest and role of Veterans Administration, Rehabilitation Services Administration, Department of Transportation, and Consumer groups. Section II provides six state-of-the-art papers covering such issues as automotive vehicles, automotive control systems, driver education and licensing, and driver performance. Section III consists of reports from the four panels. A final section includes the following attachments: an outline of the program, list of participants, list of vehicles and equipment displayed, a paper on the improved mobility package by Ford Motor Company, a Selective bibliography, and a list of adaptive automotive equipment manufacturers in compliance with Veterans Administration requirements.
