The Application of a Communication Model to the Problems of Learning Disabled Children.
Florio-Forslund, Evelyn
This paper examines the problems of learning disabled children and discusses possibilities for improving their self-concept and attitude toward school. It first notes the suspected link between juvenile delinquency and learning disabilities and suggests that initial efforts to help learning disabled children be directed at the lower-class urban school population. It then defines learning disabilities and shows how learning disabled children become frustrated by standard school requirements, explores the relationship between self-concept and academic achievement as it pertains to learning disabled children, and shows how communication strategies used by teachers affect children's self-concept and attitudes. Finally, the paper examines models representing attitude and belief formation and proposes a model that may be used to show how a change in the learning environment can have a direct influence on the self-concept of learning disabled children, which in turn influences their beliefs and subsequently their attitudes toward the learning environment. Several research questions derived from the model are listed. (GW)
