Portraits of Old Age in Contemporary Literature (Literary Views of the Old in Isolation).
Loughman,Celeste
This paper examines the ways that old age is portrayed in literature, focusing on how old people gradually disengage themselves from the social systems in which they live. The writers and works discussed present bleak portraits of old age in contrast to recent scientific assertions that human beings now live healthier, longer, more satisfying lives. The study concludes that if literary perceptions of contemporary life are accurate, then younger generations should not expect to enjoy their old age. (RL)
