In this study of 152 people who are interested in alternative life styles, the author presents some empirical evidence regarding some of the predisposing factors that may influence individuals to reject the conventional monogamous marriage and become attracted to and involved in unconventional relationships. Stressing that the childhood experiences of participants are as important as immediate background for involvement in variant family forms, the author divided her questions into four parts: family background and perceived family happiness, opinions on selected attitudes, relationships with family and friends, and reasons for being interested in multilateral relationships. Overall, respondents had unhappy childhood experiences and little involvement with their families. They did, however, have strong friendships, and were very active in politics. The major reasons for involvement in an unconventional relationship were greater emotional involvement with others and greater opportunity for personal growth. (FC)
