The Missouri Statement: A Student Call to Action.
Associated Students of the Univ. of Missouri, Columbia.
Leaders of state student associations from 22 states met in July, 1977 in Columbia, Missouri at the first national conference of state student associations. This document represents the consensus of the conference. It is a call to action for Congress, the President, state legislatures, governing boards of colleges and universities, and state student associations themselves on issues important to the American student community. The document contains individual statements which deal with the areas of federal student financial aid appropriations, student consumer information, access to student records, sexual and racial discrimination in postsecondary education, student participation in policy making, full employment and jobs for youth, and tuition and mandatory fees. The state student associations present at this conference are committed to the realization of the goals outlined in this statement. They intend to support their positions with lobby efforts in their respective state capitals, participation in national student lobbying conferences and letter writing campaigns, positive action by student members of college governing boards, and efforts to educate both public officials and the student community.
