Arts Education Advocacy.
Alliance for Arts Education, Washington, DC.
The report summarizes discussion and recommendations of five seminars on promoting the arts in education. The seminars were sponsored by the Arts Advocacy Project, a joint venture of the Music Educators National Conference, National Art Education Association, National Dance Association, and American Theatre Association. The seminars examined how other educational groups can be more direct advocates for the arts in education. One seminar was held in cooperation with each of the following groups: National Elementary School Principals Association, American Association of School Administrators, National Association of Secondary School Principals, Council of Chief State School Officers, and National School Boards Association. This report presents summaries of each meeting, position statements issued from each meeting, and a summary of all issues and recommendations. Major concerns included better integration of arts programs with the total school curriculum and stronger school/community involvement without moving arts education out of the school environment. Among 12 recommendations are (1) holding arts advocacy meetings at the state level, (2) studying the effect of arts education on discipline in secondary schools, (3) organizing a campaign to stress development of "the creative" in students as a major role of the school, and (4) developing a national academy with arts education as the focus.
