Arts Education 1977: In Prose and Print. An Overview of Nine Significant Publications Affecting the Arts in American Education.
The booklet summarizes nine recent publications representative of the growing number of reports about arts education in the United States. Selected for reasons of significance and usefulness for policy formation, the publications include descriptions of exemplary programs, summaries of research, and handbooks for effective school-community cooperation. The documents are: "Coming to Our Senses: The Significance of the Arts for American Education," by the Arts, Education and Americans Panel; "The Education of Adolescents," by the National Panel on High School and Adolescent Education; "Toward Coordinated Federal Policies for Support of Arts Education," by the Alliance for Arts Education; "Report of the NAEA Commission on Art Education;""Arts in Education Partners: Schools and Their Communities;""Arts and Aesthetics: An Agenda for the Future;""Research in Arts Education: A Federal Chapter;""Try a New Face (A Report on the 'Arts and HEW' Project)," by the Music Educators National Conference; and "The Arts Endowment and Education," by the National Endowment for the Arts. A comparative summary of the nine documents points out the need for greater federal support of arts education, careful program planning, and involvement of professional artists at pre-collegiate levels of education.
