Schools Out! Family Day Care for the School Age Child.
Prescott, Elizabeth; Milich, Cynthia
This paper presents a study of family day care services for school age children. The study involved telephone and home interviews concerning services provided by a sample of 247 family day care mothers from the Los Angeles area. The paper is divided into two parts. Part I describes the results of the interviews in numerical form and includes short analyses of the results. The chapters in Part I describe the day care arrangements (home descriptions, number and age of children, fees, hours of services, the program provided, summer services, caregiver descriptions, a discussion and survey of opinions on licensing, and a discussion of the supply and demand for day care services. Part II presents case studies of selected family day care mothers and the services they provide for school age children. This section attempts to clarify some of the reasons why women become day care mothers and their goals and feelings about the services they provide. A final chapter describes some of the issues involved in providing day care for school age children and discusses some of the necessary ingredients for providing quality care for this age group. Appendices to the paper include the interview forms, the initial contact letter, a list of tax tips for day care mothers, and a form for rating the day care environment. (BD)
