A study was conducted to develop a typological framework of college undergraduates based on students' educational orientations. The study focused on students' more specific views of the purpose of education, desired teaching-learning arrangement, and roles with faculty in academic decisionmaking. The Student Orientations Survey was administered to a sample of 3,628 undergraduates drawn from 12 colleges and universities across the U.S. Five distinct student learner profiles were identified: independent/adventurers, semi-independent, nondirected, semi-dependent, and dependent/traditionalists. Discussions centered on various implications for postsecondary institutions regarding the use of a typological scheme premised on student orientations and learning preferences. (SPG)
