Described are the roles of volunteers in social services, particularly in child abuse programs. Traditional roles are seen to include driving and other nonspecialized functions, fund-raising, organizing and coordinating, education and public awareness activities, and voluntary professional services. The following new roles for volunteers in child abuse and neglect programs are listed: parent-aides, lay therapists, providers of direct services to children, and surrogate parents. Appended is a state by state listing of child abuse and neglect programs which use volunteers. (SBH)
