Positive Alternatives to Student Suspensions: Process and Content.
Bailey, Ralph E.; Kackley, John C.
Presented are four papers on the Positive Alternatives to Student Suspensions (PASS) Program, a project designed to provide a sequence of intervention strategies intended to prevent and/or minimize the frequency of nonproductive social behavioral acts of secondary school students in participating schools. In the first paper by R. Bailey and J. Kackley, an overview of the program is given with sections covering goals and objectives, program design, evidence of effectiveness, results, staff competencies and experiences, and cost information. Outlined in a second paper titled "The Whys and Hows of a Students' Time-Out Room" by R. Bailey, et al., are guidelines for implementation of a time-out room in which students have a chance to talk out problems with a "facilitative listener". In "Helping Students Survive at School and at Home", J. Kackley describes two 12-week survival courses which provide group counseling and psychological services and take a positive approach to avoid personally destructive confrontations. Individual sessions are reviewed, and case histories of students participating in the survival courses are given. A final paper, "Humanistic Activities in the Classroom--A Twelve Week Program" by J. Kackley, explains an intervention approach which focuses on the creation of a positive environment where students develop a feeling of belonging. (SBH)
