Marital Communication: An Addition to the Interpersonal Communication Curriculum.
Glaser, Peter A.; Glaser, Susan R.
The course on marital Communication outlined in this manual focuses participants' attention on the communicative bonds that maintain a functional relationship. The course is divided into three units: "Partner as Audience," designed to help individuals in a relationship see themselves as audiences sensitive to each other's messages; "Goals," which gives attention to systematically locating and focusing on strengths and weaknesses within problematic situations; and "Message Strategies," designed to develop skills in giving and receiving feedback in a marital relationship. The manual suggests instructional procedures and activities for the course, describes each unit's content and rationale, suggests an instructional procedure for each unit, and provides exercises that may be used in class. The exercises involve participants in such activities as assessing their own values and perceptions about marriage and discussing them in small groups, role playing marital situations, setting goals for the improvement of their relationships, and sending and receiving messages in constructive ways.
