This curriculum guide suggests activities for teaching basic reading skills to elementary school students. The activities are grouped according to six major skill areas: reading readiness, word recognition, word analysis, word meaning, content reading, and reading comprehension. Within each group, the activities are listed according to the grade level for which they are most appropriate; a learning objective is specified for each activity listed. With the exception of the section on reading comprehension, each section of the guide includes checklists for evaluating individual students' skills in that area; the section on word recognition includes student review tests on using the dictionary. Although most of the activities in the guide are designated for students in grades one through six, some objectives and activities are listed for students in grades seven and eight. (GW)
