Racial/Ethnic Distribution of Public School Students and Staff in New York State, 1976-77.

The report presents the 1976-77 racial/ethnic distribution of public school students and staff in New York. Tabular data include the students' racial/ethnic distribution for the State's major school districts of Buffalo, New York, Rochester, Syracuse, and Yonkers (individually and combined), for the rest of the State, and for the State as a whole; the distribution of black and Hispanic students by location in the State; a percent distribution of public school students by racial/ethnic origin, for the years 1972-73 through 1976-77; the number of schools and the number and percent of minority students in schools of differing racial composition; the number of schools and the number and percent of black and Hispanic students in schools of differing racial composition; and the distribution of public school professional staff by racial/ethnic origin, for the current year and for the years 1972-73 through 1976-77. Appendices distribute public school students and professional staff by racial/ethnic origin for each school district in the State. Examination of the data shows that 71.4% of the black and 88.3% of the Hispanic students attended schools in New York City; in Rochester black and Hispanic representation in the public schools rose 9% over the five-year period; there were 482 schools in New York with no black or Hispanic students; about 76.2% of the black and Hispanic students attended a school that could be classified as a minority school (50% or more of the students were black or Hispanic).
