Management Development and Training Program for Colleges and Universities. Progress Report 2.
Higher Education Management Inst., Coconut Grove, FL.
Activities and findings of the Higher Education Management Institute are reviewed as of October 1976. In general, the initial assumption of need is borne out by responses from 557 colleges, since no more than 2 percent of higher education institutions have any management development and training programs underway. This report describes the project organization with regard to the pilot colleges and universities, the Exxon Foundation, consultants and subcontractors, private corporations and public agencies, and vendors of materials and programs. Major project activities and the management development and training program are detailed, along with the selection of pilot institutions. Also described is the state-of-the-art management development and training and a model for these activities in colleges and universities. Approaches, available programs and materials, and theories of organizational functioning are reviewed. The adaptation of industrial survey-guided needs assessment to higher education is discussed and a proposed methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of the program is given. Working papers, a summary of college and university proposals received, and a bibiliography are appended. (LBH)
