Stages Intensifs D'Anglais en Pays Anglophone (Intensive English Courses in an English-Speaking Country). Melanges Pedagogiques, 1973.
Over a three-year period, from 1971 to 1973, a series of three experimental intensive language sessions was held in Malta for university professors and researchers who wanted to improve their knowledge of English as a second language. Each session consisted of from 20 to 30 participants and lasted 2 weeks. The general objectives of these courses were to improve communicative competence, with more emphasis on comprehension, both written and oral, than on expression. From the first year to the second, the format was modified to allow for greater flexibility and individual choice. The third year sought to integrate the language instruction with extra-curricular activities. This kind of course has its advantages, e.g., the contact with the "real" language environment, but there are drawbacks, such as high cost and limited group size. Therefore, this type of course should be considered in connection with other, more traditional types of courses, rather than by itself. (AM)
