Coping with Incompatible Expectations: An Integrated View of Role Conflict.
Whetten, David A.
This study collected data on the nature and effects of conflicting demands faced by directors of a sample of 69 manpower programs in New York State. Using an integrated macro (organizational) and micro (individual) approach to administrative behavior, the study focused on the difficulty experienced by institutional leaders in trying to satisfy multiple interest groups with conflicting demands to place on the organization. The study examined the effects on chief administrators of conflict between staff evaluations of organizational effectiveness and the number of clients processed (output). The data indicate that leaders facing conflicting expectations experienced significantly more role related difficulties than those leaders facing complementary expectations. (Author/DS)
