Nonverbal Communication: Toward Interaction Analysis.
Drecksel, Debra
This paper defends a nonsummative perspective in the investigation of nonverbal communication. It maintains that a holistic approach is necessary for examining the systematic nature of communicaton, as well as for considering the hierarchical arrangement of behavioral units, interaction as an undissected whole, and the context of communication. Interaction analysis is the method suggested for performing nonsummative nonverbal study. The paper proposes a unit of analysis, various categories of analysis, a coding manual, data analysis, and interaction matrices. Applications of the methodology are discussed and specific research questions on the topic are proposed for further investigation. A list of references on nonverbal communication accompanies the paper. (Author/MAI)
