Techniques and Activities for Developing Critical Reading Skills with Mature Students.
Rocchio, Daniel J.
This paper develops a comprehensive and coordinated strategy for teaching critical reading and rational decision-making skills to college students. Five skills are identified as essential for developing sound reasoning processes: (1) developing an objective viewpoint, (2) identifying and clarifying an evaluative statement--the difference between fact and opinion, (3) judging factual statements against available data, (4) determining the validity of an argument, and (5) testing an evaluative statement. Sample exercises illustrate the subskills necessary for distinguishing between factual and evaluative statements and for clarifying the major judgments and related facts of the issue. (MAI)
