This document contains volume 1 of a four-volume report which describes the components of the Health Services Mobility Study (HSMS) method of task analysis, job ladder design, and curriculum development. Divided into three chapters, volume 1 is intended as an introduction to the method and contains the basic task analysis instruments. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the HSMS system and the basic concepts. Chapter 2 contains the HSMS definition of task, the HSMS scales (including the scale for task frequency, sixteen skill scales, and the knowledge scale), and the basic data collection forms. Chapter 3 contains the HSMS knowledge classification system. This document and the related volume (see note) are designed to assist institutions in rationally structuring work, utilizing its labor force, evaluating its work performance, developing job ladders, designing job-related education, or creating work-related test instruments.
