This volume provides a comprehensive listing of dissertations on Japan and Korea that are available from University Microfilms International. The present bibliography incorporates many titles that normally would be overlooked because they do not relate directly to the Japanese home islands or to the Korean peninsula. Among the ones included, for example, are those which focus on other geographical areas of the world but nonetheless contain useful information about (a) the impact of Japanese culture upon Americans and Europeans, (b) Western academic programs for the study of Northeast Asia, and (c) Japanese and Korean relations with various Asian and Western countries in both historical and contemporary times. An expanding body of research on the Japanese and Korean communities in non-Asian lands also is brought together within certain sections of the bibliography. This volume emphasizes work undertaken in the social sciences and the humanities, but it lists a number of these completed in the natural sciences as well. All dissertations within the main listing are classified by subject on the basis of the content and their specific relation to Japan or Korea. Cross-references are provided where appropriate. There are three indexes: an alphabetical listing by author, an index by degree awarding institution, and a modified subject index limited primarily to geographical, literary, and personal names.
