Sport in Canada During the Depression.
Lappage, Ronald S.
The author discusses the effect of the Great Depression upon sport in Canada. The difficulties of hockey and football teams are contrasted with the success of professional wrestling, horseracing, and bicycling. The economic plight of professional players who were not allowed to return to the "amateur" rank is discussed. Increased participation in activities such as softball, badminton, golf, skiing, bowling, and especially curling, is noted. It is observed that sport not only provided both entertainment and recreation, but also acted as a safety valve through which Canadians could release their many frustrations accentuated by the depression.
