This paper covers the following topics: (1) the status of education, in general, in the public schools, and in higher education; (2) quality considerations in teacher education; (3) the rapidly emerging strugqle for the control of the teaching market via certification by national associations, state agencies, colleges and universities, teacher organizations, and local public school systems; (4) graduate and inservice education; (5) alternative careers for the physical education major; and (6) changes in academe. In conclusion, recommendations are offered for consideration in each of the topics discussed. (JD)
