The New Model Me: High School Teacher's Manual.
Educational Research Council of America, Cleveland, OH.; Lakewood Public Schools, OH.; Ohio State Dept. of Education, Columbus.
The teaching guide contains activities, teaching techniques, and resource lists for helping high school students (1) build an understanding of human behavior, and (2) make decisions about their behavior that are more positive for themselves and others. The curriculum is based on the theory that behavior is influenced by a person's abilities and perceptions, motivating forces, and the immediate physical setting. Six units provide activities, discussion questions, and reading lists to help students understand the reasons for and consequences of their behavior. Content includes human behavior, controls (family, school system), real self, values, response, and change. Some of the activities require students to work together in small groups on projects with built-in hindrance factors. Afterwards, students discuss their frustrations and analyze their responses to the problems. Specific techniques are recommended for teaching the affective curriculum: buzz groups, fish bowl, role play, brainstorming, and sociometry. The manual also presents lists of audiovisual resources and a discussion of the philosophy behind the curriculum. (AV)
