Dealing with Causes of Behavior: A Curriculum for Intermediate Elementary. Student Book, Grades 4-5.
Educational Research Council of America, Cleveland, OH.; Lakewood Public Schools, OH.; Ohio State Dept. of Education, Columbus.
The workbook contains activities and reading suggestions for fourth and fifth graders to help them learn about the causes and effects of their own behavior and the behavior of others. Emphasis is on understanding frustrations and aggressive feelings, and finding constructive ways of dealing with them. The eight units in the workbook correspond to units in the teacher's manual. Content includes behavior; fears and security; friendship, love, and belonging; self-worth; anger; aggressive behavior; behavior towards people and property; and making changes. Activities include reading and interpreting poems and short stories; completing sentence stems such as "I feel safe when..."; discussing alternatives to choices presented in stories; and identifying instances of good behavior versus misbehavior. At the end of each unit are lists of supplementary reading materials. Most of these are books about growing up, being accepted by peers, moving to a new home, and understanding one's parents. Ethnic groups are well-represented. (AV)
