The conversion to the metric system of measurement and resulting advantages over the English system are discussed. Names of metric units are listed along with the multiplication factors indicated by their prefixes. A comparison of the major units of both systems using everyday quantities and sizes is made and a guide for estimating the most common household measurements is included. Several examples concerning area, weight, and volume provide calculations carried out in both systems. (MN)
