Previously reported methods for the compilation of core lists of journals in multidisciplinary areas are first examined, with toxicology used as an example of such an area. Three approaches to the compilation of a core list of journals in toxicology were undertaken and the results analyzed with the aid of models. Analysis of the results of the three approaches yielded six factors that need to be considered in the compilation of an authoritative core list of journals for toxicology. A list of the highest ranking journals, identified by these methods from among several hundred journals, as being of relevance to toxicology is given. Methods by which such a core list can be derived are outlined. (Author/MR)
