2nd Annual Reader: Northern Wisconsin Symposium on Human Services in the Rural Environment (Cable, Wisconsin, October 7-8, 1976).
Bast, David, Ed.; Schmidt, Julie, Ed.
A collection of papers by educators and health and social services practitioners comprises this reader on human services in rural areas. Part one, "An Overview of Contextual Differences between Urban and Rural Human Service Practice," also includes a paper on how to maintain confidentiality in a rural environment. The "Services to Youth" papers deal with protection of children and the problems of nonconforming adolescents in rural America. Part three looks at "Services to the Rural Elderly," focusing on innovative programming in rural Wisconsin for the increasingly elderly population. "Rural Health Care" considers the overlapping medical-social problems of alcoholism, consumer training in prenatal health care, and the need for more social worker participation in rural primary health care. Use of the telephone to provide consumer health information and of radio technology to improve field communication comprise "New Technology in Rural Human Services." Under "Developing Rural Delivery Systems," an Iowa public welfare agency's modernized delivery system and a new concept for development at a graduate school of social work in Minnesota are described. Part seven is a previously unpublished 22-page "Bibliography of Social Work in Rural Areas." (RS)
