Annotations of twenty English placement tests are presented, providing for each a general description, information on content, publication of results, diagnostic capabilities, and predictability. Tests are arranged in three categories: (1) standardized English placement tests, including The College English Placement Test, Comparative Guidance and Placement Program (regular and self-scoring editions), Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills, Cooperative English Tests, Descriptive Tests of Language Skills, English Composition Test, Junior College Placement Program, McGraw-Hill Basic Skills Program (Writing Test), Missouri College English Test, Purdue High School English Test, Stanford Test of Academic Skills, Test of Standard Written English; (2) college designed English placement tests, including Skyline College's English Composition Writing Sample, Hake's Essay Examination, Chabot College's Individual Study Plan, Mercyhurst College Diagnostic Pre-Test, Canada College's The Writing Sample; and (3) testbook and programmed sequence tests, including Harbrace Diagnostic Tests and Individualized English Set H. An analysis is given regarding which tests diagnose specific writing problems, how results are reported, what is actually being tested, and whether tests validly predict student achievement. (LH)
